Learning Network: Four New Resources for Teaching and Learning About the Protests

Writing prompts and activities for reflecting and reacting

Dear Reader,

School is out — or almost out — across the country. Even where class is in session, most students are learning remotely. A continuing pandemic in June is certainly not the easiest of circumstances for teachers and students to process and engage with the grief, frustration and anger erupting across this nation in hundreds of protests this week.

But the issues at stake in these protests — from the history of policing and systemic racism to the power of protesting and leadership in a crisis — are so incredibly important to the fabric of our communities and the progress of our nation that we hope students and teachers will find a way, despite the circumstances, to teach and learn about them together.

To help, we have published four new resources in the past week:

  • A Student Opinion question that invites students to share their emotions, thoughts and reactions to everything that is going on. Over 300 students have already commented.
  • A Teaching Resource that helps teachers and students explore the complicated causes and issues underlying these protests using dozens of resources in The Times and elsewhere.
  • A Lesson of the Day that helps students learn about the killing of George Floyd in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis and the immediate aftermath.
  • A Roundup of Student Comments that highlights what teenagers from across the country are seeing, feeling and thinking.

Please let us know what other resources related to the protests would be helpful for your schools. As always, you can email us at LNFeedback@nytimes.com.

Sincerely,
Michael Gonchar, editor
