The United States Postal Service is at the center of the latest political conflict in the U.S., as Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has made several changes to USPS operations that have caused delays. DeJoy is a political ally of President Trump (and one of his top donors in North Carolina). His policies have alarmed critics, who believe they are an attempt to tilt the scales toward Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
The fears arise because Trump has been a vocal critic of mail-in voting, which he says is vulnerable to fraud. It's a spurious claim, as mail-in ballots, like absentee ballots, undergo thorough scrutiny and ballot fraud is rare (the Brennan Center for Justice puts the rate of ballot fraud at between 0.0003 percent and 0.0025 percent). Given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, mail-in ballots may be the only way many Americans feel safe casting votes this November.
The Postal Service is one of America's oldest institutions, and one of its most popular. Now, it's even getting support from an online phenomenon: Stan culture. Stans (the term comes from an Eminem song about an obsessive fan) are steeped in the world of social media, and are using platforms like TikTok to spread awareness of the Postal Service's woes.
