8 V.R. lesson plans

Dear Reader,

As we all know, there is a very important election happening right now. But while we wait for voting to end and the ballots to be counted, there is still meaningful teaching and learning going on — and we have new resources to help.

In 2015, The New York Times pioneered a new form of storytelling: virtual reality journalism. Since then, The Times has created a series of 360-degree videos that transport viewers from their living rooms to far-flung places — from Antarctica to Ethiopia, the depths of the oceans to Pluto, back to the beginning of the universe and through Olympic history. Yesterday we published a teaching guide with eight lesson plans featuring 11 of those V.R. films.

In addition, this week is Media Literacy Week, so we created a Lesson of the Day, “How to Deal With a Crisis of Misinformation,” and a Student Opinion question, “Should Media Literacy Be a Required Course in School?” to help students think critically about their own habits in consuming and sharing information.

Finally, we invite all teachers to register for our “What’s Going On in This Graph?” webinar, to be held on Nov. 5. We’ll share ideas for using this popular feature across the curriculum.

Below you’ll find a selection of the many other activities and lessons we published in the past few days, and we’ll be in touch again next week with new resources helping us process this question: What is next for our democracy?

Best,

Michael Gonchar, editor
